   i think having succeed in there is pretty funny if you read the sentence like it is.

   Secede means to leave the union. It’s what the confederate states attempted and provoked Lincoln to wage The War of Northern Aggression (aka the War Between the States.)
   More serious threats of secession have been and still are being made by some Alaskans (including Sarah Palin’s husband.) There is a political party up there called THE ALASKAN INDEPENDENCE PARTY. When Arliss Sturgelewski, a woman, won the Republican nomination for Governor back in 1990, the good ol’ boys persuaded former governor Walter J. Hickel to come out of retirement to oppose her and the Democrat Tony Knowles (former Mayor of Anchorage.) Hickel became the gubenatorial candidate of the Alaskan Independence Party. News Media in lower 48 misreported that he was the nominee of the Independents party. When elected everyone finally found out that #1 on the party platform was the goal of secession from the United States to form an independent Alaskan nation.
   Curious note, Hickel’s running mate, Jack Coghill Lt. Governor was found murdered by the railroad track outside Fairbanks a few years later.
